When someone decides to seek therapy, they often acknowledge responsibility for their choices and for their future. The therapist's task would be to help them recognize what they can do to live up to their full potential. The emphasis can be put on their good points, hence bringing out their "latent aliveness." The therapist must be in the phenomenological world, i.e., the present, with the client; the therapist whole being must be with them. It truly means listening, relinquishing stereotypes, anticipation and allowing oneself to be shaped by the client's responses. The therapist offers their own characteristics, then transcends themselves, not as a disinterested observer but a real human being.
Therapy is task taken on by both the client and the therapist. Respect in an important factor in this relationship. The therapist would have faith in their client's potential to cope and discover ways to better themselves. The therapist models authentic behavior by being transparently real with the clients and self disclosing at appropriate times. This in turn will engage the client in being authentic and less guarded. The client is often encouraged to discuss his values, beliefs and assumptions about themselves. This gives the therapist insight into the client's attitude toward themselves. To quote Yalom, "The therapist's mandate is clear: to illuminate the present, to expose and scatter the demons of the past, to help the patient detoxify events that are intrinsically benign but irrationally experienced and noxious."
